Serena Williams won her first WTA TOUR title at the Open de Gaz in paris France this February by defeating Australian Open Finalist Amelie Mauresmo in three sets. Serena was able to share her victory with older sister Venus Williams who several hours later successfully defeated her first ever career title in Oklahoma City by defeating Amanda Coetzer in straight sets. Venus and Serena made history by being the first sisters ever to win a seperate tournament in the same week.
The Month of February bought much sadness to the world of tennis. Menno Oostings of the Neterlands was killed ina car crash while driving back from and even in Cherburg Grance. He was 34 years old. Oostings never won a ATP Tour singles title but reach a career high of 72 in 1988. his best Grand Slam performance was the forth round of the 1988 Australian Open.
Bill Trabert a star tennis player who later on became the tournament director of the US Open, died of February 27th. The cause of his death was not immediately known. Trabert was ten years old when he was diagnosed with diabetes and became the first diabetic ever compete althletically on a international level. Trabert was ranking in the top 10 in the fifties and sixties. He was instrumental in introducing the tiebreak in a major tournament having played the longest doubles and mixed doubles tennis matches on record. He was inducted into the hall of fame in Rhode Island in 1967. He survived by two sons, W. Pike and Peter and two grandsons.
Swiss number two Patty Schnyder has hired new coach and trainer Rainer Harnecker, a German alternative medicine practitioner. Schnyder's former coach Eric Van Harpen continues to work with twenty-on year old Austrian Sylvia Plischke.
Yevgeny Kafelnikova almost became Russia's first number one men singles playe rin February. Kafelnikova had only to defeat a young talked Swed Thomas Johansson to usurp the throne from Pete Sampras. Kafelnikov appeared nervous and was unable to win the quarterfinal matchup, saving Sampras' ranking for another week...
