Venus Started playing tennis when she was 4 1/2 years old on neighborhood courts, Most of her family played tennis including her Rapidly Rising sister Serena. They participate in the USTA/National Junior tennis league which was started by fellow African American Tennis Playing Arthur Ashe in 1969. Venus Accumulated a 63-0 record in USTA sectional play in Southern California . But Venus nor her Sister Serene competed in Junior Tournaments; instead, they competed against themselves.
Venus turned Pro in 1994 but played few tournaments because her father wanted her and up and comming sister Serena to finish High School.
Venus breaks her own record for the fastest Serve by a woman at 127mph ace against Mary Pierce in the Semifinal at the 1998 European Championships
Defeat Patty Schnyder to win the inagural Grand Slam Cup and took home a
record $800,000 pay check.
Venus served a record breaking 125mph ace agains Barbara Shett in the second round at the 1998 Wimbledon Championships
Made the Quarterfinals at the 1998 Austraian Open, French Open and Wimbledon
Venus also made the Semifinal at the 1998 US Open where she
lost to the eventual champion, Lindsay Davenport.
Won the Lipton Championships for her first major singles crown and on the way
she defeated World #1 Martina Hingis in domination fashion in the Semifinal
Recieved award in 1995 from the Sports Image Foundation for conducting
tennis clinics in low-income areas.
Named U.S Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Month for September
1997 after reaching the finals of the US OPEN
At the 1997 US Open,
Venus was the first woman to reach her first final in her debut Since Pam
Shriver in 1978
At 1997 Indian Wells, as a wildcard entry and ranked
#211, Venus defeated #9 Iva Majoli to reach the quarterfinals.
Defeated World #1 Martina Hingis in her first match of 1998 in Sydney
Australia in route to her second career finals where she lost to Arantxa
Sanchez vicario. It was the first time since 1975 that the #1 player lost
her first match of the season.
